Machaba Camp
Situated in the game rich Khwai area on the eastern tongue of the Okavango Delta, lies the sophisticated Machaba Camp. The setting is exquisite and guests will fall in love with the understated elegant colonial architecture of Machaba. Wake up to the sounds of hippo wallowing in the Delta and enjoy outdoor dining on the banks of the Khwai.
Ten luxury tents with en-suite bathrooms and outdoor showers are located between tall riverine trees. Each of the tents have views of the Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve. From these tented verandas one can watch the daily parade of animals coming down to drink at the river in front of camp. Machaba, despite its obvious luxury is still an affordable camp.
Gomoti Plains Camp
The Gomoti Plains is located in a community run concession, on the edge of the Gomoti river system southeast of the Okavango Delta.
The area is known for its large concentrations of wildlife which thrive on the Gomoti plains and waterways. The Gomoti trees line the waterways and provide excellent cover for nesting water birds such as herons and storks. This exclusive area has been a well-kept secret for many years. The Gomoti region has been the local haunt of many of the older guides and Okavango dwellers who refer to it in nostalgic terms when they used to camp along this river system.
Kiri Camp
Kiri Camp is named after the Kiri channel which flows past the island on which the camp is situated. The camp is raised on wooden decks to give one a view of the mighty Kiri floodplains which stretch out in front of the camp. The luxury tents are designed to incorporate the surrounding ebony forest, and the use of wood, canvas, and reeds are primary to the architecture of this stunning camp.
Kiri Camp offers a combination of both game drives and water activities. Based on a private concession, these activities will take you to some of the more remote areas in the delta, previously inaccessible.

This nine-night journey showcases three extraordinary camps in the Okavango Delta, combining thrilling game drives, traditional mokoro rides, and breathtaking walking safaris. To help you plan your perfect trip, this guide answers the 10 most frequently searched questions about a Botswana safari, ensuring you’re fully prepared for your journey to Africa’s wild heart.
When Is the Best Time to Go on Safari in Botswana?
One of the most common questions travellers ask is about timing. Botswana is a fantastic safari destination year-round, but the experience shifts dramatically with the seasons. The dry season, which runs from May to October, is widely considered the best time for game viewing. During these cooler months, animals gather around permanent water sources, and the Okavango Delta floods with crystal-clear water, creating a stunning contrast of arid landscapes and lush waterways. This period is perfect for photographers, with crisp skies and breathtaking sunsets.
The green season, from November to April, has its own charm. While there may be occasional afternoon rains, this time of year offers lush, emerald landscapes, dramatic skies, and a burst of new life as many animals give birth. Birdwatching is at its peak, with migratory species flocking to the Delta. It’s also a quieter time to travel, with fewer visitors and more competitive rates, making it an excellent choice for those seeking solitude and a softer, more intimate safari experience.
What Wildlife Will I See on Safari?
Botswana is a wildlife paradise. It boasts some of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa, and you’ll often find yourself surrounded by these gentle giants, whether they’re wading through the Delta’s channels or browsing near your camp. The country is also home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino—though rhinos are more elusive and found in select protected areas.
Predators are a major highlight here. Lion prides, leopards lounging in trees, packs of endangered African wild dogs, and the occasional cheetah sighting make Botswana an extraordinary place for predator viewing. Beyond the well-known animals, the Delta teems with unique species like the red lechwe and sitatunga, both antelope perfectly adapted to marshy habitats. Over 500 bird species call Botswana home, making it a dream for birdwatchers and photographers alike.
Why Choose Botswana Over Other Safari Destinations?
Botswana sets itself apart with its low-volume, high-quality safari model. Unlike many destinations where wildlife sightings can feel crowded, Botswana’s approach limits visitor numbers and prioritizes conservation. Camps and lodges are located in vast private concessions, giving you the sense that you have Africa all to yourself. This exclusivity not only ensures a more authentic and tranquil safari but also reduces environmental impact, supporting long-term sustainability.
For travellers seeking privacy, exceptional guiding, and a deep connection to nature, Botswana is unmatched. The combination of untouched landscapes, thriving wildlife, and carefully curated lodges makes it one of the world’s most luxurious safari destinations.
What Activities Will I Enjoy During This Safari?
One of Botswana’s greatest strengths is the diversity of activities. Twice-daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles allow you to track big game with the help of expert guides. In the Delta, a highlight is the chance to glide silently through lily-dotted channels on a traditional mokoro, a dugout canoe that lets you experience wildlife at water level.
For those seeking even more adventure, walking safaris provide a thrilling opportunity to connect with the bush on foot, learning to interpret animal tracks, scents, and signs. Between activities, unwind at your camp, watch elephants pass by, or enjoy a scenic flight over the wetlands. Evenings are spent around the campfire, stargazing and sharing stories with guides who know every inch of this land.
What Should I Pack for a Botswana Safari?
Packing for a fly-in safari is all about practicality. Light aircraft impose strict luggage weight limits, so pack light and choose versatile clothing. Neutral colours like beige, olive, and khaki help you blend into the environment.
Breathable, lightweight fabrics are ideal for daytime, while a warm jacket or fleece is essential for chilly mornings and evenings.
Other essentials include a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent. A good camera with extra batteries and memory cards is highly recommended for capturing Botswana’s wildlife. A small daypack is perfect for carrying binoculars, water, and gear on game drives.
