KAROLINA LASSE

Karolina is a remarkable woman driven primarily by her deep rooted love for nature, wildlife and adventure. Lina as she is affectionately known, lives a life that is defined by incredible experiences and an unwavering determination to keep learning. Her love affair with Africa and its inhabitants reads like a fine book, and we are thrilled to see what the next chapter brings.

Social Media Mogul and lover of all things great and small

Born and raised in Germany, Karolina's childhood was filled with the presence of horses, laying the foundation for her profound connection with animals and the natural world. Her affinity for horseback riding not only fostered a sense of discipline but also kindled an insatiable curiosity for the untouched landscapes of distant lands.

From an early age, Karolina harbored an innate fascination with Africa. At 17, she embarked on her first journey to Togo, a pivotal moment that ignited her enduring love affair with the continent. Roaming through the expanse of Togo, she absorbed its rich culture, vibrant landscapes, and the warmth of its people, cementing her desire to intertwine her life with Africa.

Fueling her artistic spirit, she pursued a three-year study in photography, accentuated by a specialized focus on design and fashion. Embracing her passion for Africa, she leveraged her creative talents to craft engaging and insightful social media content. Through her videos, she not only entertained but also educated her audience on pressing conservation issues.

The pivotal discovery of a pathway to become a safari guide catalyzed Karolina's relentless pursuit of her dreams. Determined and resolute, she packed her bags and ventured to South Africa, immersing herself in extensive training across Kruger's vast terrains and Botswana's diverse landscapes.

For over four years, Karolina honed her craft as a professional safari guide, in various Game Reserves all over South Africa, including the Waterberg and later the prestigious Timbavati Game Reserve. Embracing a thirst for knowledge, she started studying Nature Conservation, which has opened new insights of Wildlife Management, Park Conservation, and even Oceanography and Marine Biology.

The challenges posed by the global pandemic did not deter Karolina; instead, they presented an opportunity for further growth. During the tumultuous times of Covid, she completed EMT/Paramedic training, expanding her skill set and equipping herself with valuable tools that seamlessly aligned with her dedication to conservation efforts.

Karolina's journey is a testament to unwavering determination, a profound love for the natural world, and an unyielding commitment to conservation. Her fusion of creativity, expertise in photography, and an ever-growing knowledge of wildlife management exemplifies her multifaceted approach toward advocating for the preservation of our planet's most precious ecosystems. Karolina's fervent passion and specialization revolve around wildflowers and the intricate realms of botany.

As she nears the completion of her Nature Conservation Diploma, Karolina stands poised, as her journey continues to unfold, a testament to the boundless possibilities that emerge when passion meets perseverance.

Get to know your Guide - Karolina Lasse

  • If you could have any wild animal as a sidekick on your safaris, which one would it be and why?

A chameleon. It could always sit on my shoulder, catch all the flies for me and keep a (almost) 360-degree eye out for all the animals.

  • What's your all-time favourite safari destination, and what makes it so special to you?

The Pafuri region, in the Northern Kruger. Not only will you find exceptional birdlife and a breathtaking fever tree forest there but the change from dry to rainy season along the Luvuvhu River is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever come to witness.

  • What's the most extraordinary wildlife encounter you've ever had while on a safari, and how did it leave an impact on you?

One moment that has shaped me deeply as a guide, was when I was lucky enough to find a 2-week-old lion cub, surrounded by its pride. It was wobbling towards my vehicle and in an impulse, I reversed and made sure that there was enough distance between me and the cub…not one moment too late as I could see that the oldest female had readied herself to pounce at me but she relaxed again after she saw that I gave her cub more space. A truly humbling experience.

  • Which safari experience do you find most exhilarating - tracking big cats, observing elephants at a waterhole, or bird-watching in a lush forest?

I have a deep appreciation for the small things, may it be a delicate flower, a fleeting glimpse of a bird disappearing in the thicket or an elephant mother reaching out for her calf. I love observing the small gestures of nature that bring the cycle of life together.

  • If you had to sum up your passion for guiding and the wild in one sentence, what would it be?

My nature is being dedicated to nature.

  • If you could have any superpower on safari, what would it be?

My superpower would be to ask animals for directions.

“Sorry, Mr. Impala, have you seen a lion walking past? Based on the tracks I would say, he would’ve been here about half an hour ago…?”

“I have seen a lion, Ms Karolina! You are right, he walked past 45 min ago and gave me and my family a big fright, let me tell you that. I’m sure if you continue east along this road, you’ll still catch him.”

  • What's the most unusual or funny wildlife behaviour you've ever witnessed?

I once saw a young elephant bull enter a damn with two hippos in. He started chasing them, flapping his trunk around wildly and trumpeting.

Once the hippos were underwater, he stood very still but as soon as they came up he started his little game again. He enjoyed his personal Whack-a-mole very much.

  • If you were to lead a safari for your favourite celebrity, who would it be, and what kind of safari experience would you plan for them?

Jane Goodall. She has been a lifelong role model of mine, the way she unites young people and uses her voice for conservation is awe-inspiring. With her profound expertise, I'd extend an invitation for us to embark on a Chimpanzee tracking expedition in Gombe. Undoubtedly, this journey would be an enlightening experience for both of us.

  • Which destination is still on your bucket list and why?

Odzala-Kokoua National Park. This has been a lifelong dream of mine, just the thought of being surrounded by its great biodiversity and deeply rooted wilderness fills me with excitement.

  • What legacy do you want to leave behind ?

I aspire to leave a legacy that makes conservation education accessible to all, igniting inspiration in people's hearts and creating unforgettable African experiences that deepen their connection to nature's wonders.
