  • If you could have any wild animal as a sidekick on your safaris, which one would it be and why?

If I could choose a wild animal as a safari sidekick, it would undoubtedly be Makulu, the leader of the infamous Mapoga Lion Coalition. The coalition of six male lions first appeared in March 2006-2012, I was fortunate enough to see them in action in 2009.

Their dominance and resilience in claiming and maintaining a 70,000-hectare territory embody leadership, tenacity, and defiance of the norm. I love a challenge and will constantly provide safaris’ for our clients, with the utmost ‘pride’ in our work.

  • What's your all-time favourite safari destination, and what makes it so special to you?

After two decades of guiding safaris across Southern & East Africa, it's challenging to pick a favourite. However, the vastness and rich biodiversity of Southern Tanzania's Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve) holds a special place in my heart.

  • What's the most extraordinary wildlife encounter you've ever had while on a safari, and how did it leave an impact on you?

One unforgettable moment occurred on the banks of the Boro River in the Okavango Delta, where I witnessed a peaceful herd of 60 elephants alongside a pack of African Wild Dogs, leaving an indelible mark on my safari experiences

  • Which safari experience do you find most exhilarating - tracking big cats, observing elephants at a waterhole, or bird-watching in a lush forest?

Tracking big cats, (Panthera Leo) whether on foot, in a vehicle, for research, or personal skills honing, never fails to exhilarate me.

  • If you had to sum up your passion for guiding and the wild in one sentence, what would it be?

To quote Joy Adamson, "Wildlife is something which man cannot construct. Once it is gone, it is gone forever"  My passion for guiding and the wild can be encapsulated in this sentiment.

  • If you could have any superpower on safari, what would it be?

The Power of Weather Control: Like Thor.

My power over the elements lets me protect wildlife by diverting storms from their habitats, bringing rain to drought-stricken areas, and using controlled fires for ecosystem management. With my abilities, I could safeguard the natural world and its delicate balance. As a guardian of wildlife, shielding the critically endangered from the harshest elements of climate change, human destruction and preserving the delicate balance of nature.

  • What's the most unusual or funny wildlife behaviour you've ever witnessed?

One memorable moment involved a mischievous honey badger wreaking havoc in a lodges bar fridge, leading to a comical crisis management situation. Talk about crisis management before our clients walked past the bar en-route to the our safari vehicles, at 05h30 – Priceless!

  • If you were to lead a safari for your favourite celebrity, who would it be, and what kind of safari experience would you plan for them?

So many of my favourite celebrities aren’t alive anymore, so currently I would guide Chad Smith and his family (Drummer of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers).

It would be an 12 night exploration across East Africa, with drumming circles for the youth, magnificent wildlife viewing in the Eastern Serengeti, Mara North Conservancies’, Laikipia and ending at a private beach villa on Lamu Island on the Kenyan coast. Can you imagine the soundtrack to this safari ? Epic.

  • Which destination is still on your bucket list and why?

Mongolia is a top destination on my bucket list, offering untamed landscapes, rich history, and the chance to connect with nomadic tribes. To view the vast Gobi desert and learn the fascinating history of the Genghis Khan empire, to explore this on horseback and overnight with nomadic tribesman in their ‘gers’ would be a mammoth expedition and privilege.

  • What legacy do you want to leave behind ?

My ultimate legacy is to make a tangible difference in conservation, addressing human-wildlife conflicts and leaving a positive impact on communities, wildlife, and wilderness regions in Africa, alongside Antje my wife, and my daughter Dominique.

This vision extends to our dedicated team and partners in the tourism industry.
