If you love photography but still find yourself wondering which shutter speed to use, changing settings when the moment has already passed, or simply wishing you understood your camera a little better, you are exactly the kind of traveller we had in mind when creating this journey.

This is not an advanced photography workshop where everyone arrives with professional equipment and years of experience.

It is a privately guided journey through Southern Africa where you can learn while you photograph.

Antje is there to help with settings, composition, changing light and getting more from the equipment you already own. Martin brings more than 20 years of safari guiding experience, helping you understand wildlife behaviour, anticipate what may happen next and think about positioning before the moment disappears.

Already confident with your camera? You will have the freedom to work independently, while still benefiting from experienced wildlife interpretation, private vehicles, photographic hides and two guides travelling with you throughout.

Your enthusiasm matters far more than the size of your lens.

You are not alone.

Modern cameras are extraordinarily capable, but that doesn't mean they're easy to understand.

Perhaps you know the basics but struggle when an animal starts moving.

Maybe someone told you to shoot in Manual and now you're spending more time looking at settings than wildlife.

Maybe you understand aperture but ISO still confuses you.

Or perhaps you're actually quite comfortable with your camera but want to become better at anticipating wildlife and composing photographs rather than simply recording sightings.

That is what this safari is for.

There are no exams.

No expectation that you know the terminology.

And no embarrassment in asking:

"Why did that photograph come out blurry?"

We can look at it together and work out why.

Where Does This Southern Africa Photographic Safari Go

From an elephants textured skin to the sweep of an Atlantic coastline, and the rising spray of Victoria Falls, this journey brings a remarkable range of subjects into focus. Our March 2027 Photographic Safari is perfect for amateurs, seasoned pro's and spouses with no interest in photography whatsoever.

Martin and Antje accompany you throughout the entire journey, helping you understand the wildlife behaviour, work with the light and discover the photographs and stories of each location.

Johannesburg - Settle in Before the Adventure Begins

Your first night in Johannesburg give you time to recover from the international flight. Meet Martin & Antje and get to know your fellow travellers.

Karongwe Private Game Reserve - Greater Kruger National Park

Karongwe offers the possibility of photographing lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo, alongside giraffes, antelope and birdlife. Look for the curve of an elephant’s trunk, the expression of a resting lion or a giraffe framed against the sky. A striking photograph may come from a grand encounter or an easily overlooked detail.

Four nights at Kuname give you successive outings to develop your approach. Experiment with an environmental portrait, practise following movement or take the time to consider what belongs in the background. Martin works with the local guiding team to interpret behaviour, while Antje helps you translate what you are seeing into a photograph.

Photographic Hide: A View from Water Level

Karongwe’s photographic hide offers a particularly exciting perspective. Built at water level, it brings your lens down towards the surface, opening up possibilities for reflections and intimate compositions as wildlife approaches the water. Elephants, antelope and visiting birds offer potential subjects, with each encounter unfolding on the animals’ own terms.

Hide photography rewards quiet observation. Choose your frame, watch the water and wait for a gesture, a reflection or a ripple to change the scene. It is an opportunity to explore a different visual approach from photographing on a game drive.

Cape Town

Cape Town invites you to see differently. After concentrating on wildlife, you arrive in a city where mountains rise above the streets and the coastline keeps drawing your eye towards the horizon. There is pleasure in the broad views, but also in a painted doorway, an unexpected shadow or a small detail that gives a photograph its sense of place.

Three full-day excursions take you through the city, around the Cape Peninsula and into the Winelands. Bring your wide lens and your curiosity.

City Photography: Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap and Street Art

Our city day brings together Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap and a graffiti walking tour.

Weather permitting, Table Mountain introduces the city on a magnificent scale: buildings, coastline and distant ridges arranged beneath you. It is a chance to work with layers, space and the relationship between the city and its extraordinary setting.

In Bo-Kaap, the attention shifts to bold colour, cobbled streets and architectural detail. This is a living neighbourhood with a rich Cape Malay heritage, best explored with curiosity and respect for the people who call it home.

The graffiti walking tour adds another creative dimension. Look for patterns, contrasts and the relationship between an artwork and the street around it. The same city that fills a panoramic frame can be equally compelling in a close-up.

Cape Peninsula Photography: Cape Point, Boulders and Misty Cliffs

The Peninsula day is made for photographers who love the meeting of land and sea. Cape Point offers dramatic headlands and expansive ocean views, while Misty Cliffs invites you to explore the mood of the Atlantic coast: surf, shoreline and the changing relationship between water and sky.

At Boulders, African penguins bring wildlife back into the frame. Watch their movements, interactions and distinctive shapes, then step back photographically to include the coastal setting around them. The penguin viewing area and boardwalks provide ways to observe the colony while respecting its space.

Across the day, the challenge is wonderfully varied: convey the scale of a headland, follow a penguin’s movement or simplify a seascape into colour, line and texture.

Cape Winelands: Vineyard Views and Three Tastings

Our full-day Winelands excursion combines three wine tastings with time to appreciate the scenery and character of the estates we visit.

Vineyard rows invite you to work with leading lines. Mountain backdrops give depth to wider compositions, while gardens, architecture and table details offer smaller stories. There is as much pleasure in noticing the light through a wine glass as there is in photographing an expansive view.

And some moments deserve to be enjoyed with the camera beside you. Good wine, conversation and a beautiful setting are part of the journey too.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a place you feel as well as see. The sound builds, spray rises above the gorge and glimpses of falling water reveal the extraordinary scale of the landscape.

March typically falls within the high-water period, when the Zambezi can produce a spectacular curtain of water and towering spray. Conditions vary with rainfall, but this is a season associated with the Falls’ power and drama.

For photographers, the attraction is movement and atmosphere: water against dark rock, vegetation emerging through mist and, when sunlight and spray align, the possibility of rainbows. Think beyond fitting the entire waterfall into one frame. A smaller section can convey its force just as powerfully.

Heavy spray can obscure viewpoints and requires care with camera equipment. With Martin and Antje alongside you, the photographic approach responds to the conditions, making the most of what the Falls reveal.

After wildlife at Karongwe, the colour and coastlines of Cape Town, and the landscapes of the Winelands, Victoria Falls brings the journey to an unforgettable close over Easter weekend.
