Victoria Falls: Zimbabwe vs. Zambia — Which Side Should You Choose in 2026?

Victoria Falls or Livingstone ? Which side of the Victoria Falls is best?

Few places on Earth stir the soul like Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders” — this mighty waterfall straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

One of the most common safari planning questions we hear is:

“Should I visit the Zimbabwe side or the Zambia side of Victoria Falls?”

The truth? Both sides are extraordinary — but they offer very different perspectives, experiences, and seasonal highlights. At Martin Meyer Safaris, we often design itineraries that include both, but if you have to choose, here’s a full breakdown to help you decide.

Quick Answer: Which Side is Better?

Zimbabwe: Best for year-round panoramic views (75% of the Falls visible), iconic viewpoints, and easy access to lodges.

Zambia: Best for adventure (Devil’s Pool, white-water rafting), up-close encounters, and seasonal experiences when the water is lower.

If you’re short on time and want classic views, Zimbabwe wins. If you’re adventurous and don’t mind timing your visit with the seasons, Zambia might just thrill you more.

Victoria Falls in 2025: What to Expect

Water levels fluctuate dramatically:

  • High water (Feb–June): The Falls thunder with incredible force; expect spray so heavy it feels like rain.
  • Low water (Sept–Dec): More rock face exposed; Devil’s Pool on the Zambian side opens; better photo clarity.

Martin’s Top Tip:
“Don’t be put off by spray — bring a poncho and waterproof bag. Some of my most dramatic photos were taken in April when the mist was so thick I could barely see.”

Antje’s Top Tip:
“If you’re visiting in low water, the Zambia side is spectacular — Devil’s Pool is one of those bucket-list experiences you’ll never forget.”

The Zimbabwe Side of Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe offers the classic postcard view of the Falls.

Highlights

  • 75% of the Falls visible: From the Devil’s Cataract to Rainbow Falls, you get multiple viewpoints along a well-maintained path.
  • Photographer’s dream: Rainbows form daily in the spray.
  • Year-round flow: Even in dry season, the Zimbabwe side still gushes water.
  • Town convenience: Victoria Falls town is walking distance from viewpoints, with lodges, craft markets, and restaurants nearby.

Best Time to Visit Zimbabwe Side

  • March–July: Peak flow for drama and spray rainbows.
  • Aug–Oct: Lower flow, but still plenty of water for great photos.

The Zambia Side of Victoria Falls

The Zambia side is closer, wilder, and more adventurous.

Highlights

  • Knife Edge Bridge: Stand right above the chasm with water roaring beneath you.
  • Devil’s Pool: Swim on the very lip of the Falls (only possible Aug–Dec in low water).
  • Lunar Rainbow: See a rare rainbow created by moonlight during full moons.
  • Livingstone vibe: Smaller town, less commercial than Vic Falls town, but charming.

Best Time to Visit Zambia Side

  • Aug–Dec: For Devil’s Pool and best clarity.
  • High water months: Knife Edge is thrilling but prepare to get soaked.

Crossing Between Zimbabwe and Zambia

Good news: you can see both sides in one trip.

  • KAZA Univisa: One visa covers Zimbabwe, Zambia, and day-trips to Botswana.
  • Border: The Victoria Falls Bridge connects the two; crossing takes 30–60 minutes.
  • Logistics: Easy to base in Zimbabwe and day-trip to Zambia (or vice versa).

Combining Victoria Falls with a Safari

Victoria Falls isn’t just a standalone stop — it’s a natural extension to Southern Africa safaris.

  • From Botswana: Chobe National Park is just 90 minutes away — combine river safaris with Vic Falls.
  • From Kruger/Greater Kruger: Daily flights connect Johannesburg or Kruger Mpumalanga to Vic Falls.
  • From Zambia: Combine with Lower Zambezi or South Luangwa for river and walking safaris.
