What is a private group safari?
A private group safari is a tailor-made African safari reserved for your own invited group. You choose who travels, when you depart and what matters most to you. The itinerary, accommodation, vehicles, activities and level of guiding are then planned around your group.
This is different from joining a scheduled small-group departure, where individual travellers book places on a pre-arranged journey. On a private group safari, there are no unknown guests and no need to follow a pace designed for somebody else.

What group size works best for a private African safari?
There is no universal perfect number, but the group size affects vehicles, accommodation and price.

Vehicle capacity is not the same as comfortable safari capacity. Even when more seats are technically available, photographers, tall guests or travellers spending long days in the field may be much more comfortable with fewer people per vehicle. We plan around the quality of the experience, not simply the maximum number of seats.
Should our group book a safari villa or take over a lodge?
A private villa can be ideal for families and groups of friends who want shared living spaces, flexible mealtimes and a greater sense of privacy. Depending on the property, it may include a dedicated vehicle, guide, host or chef. A full lodge or camp takeover becomes worth considering when your group would occupy most of the available rooms anyway. It can give you control over shared spaces, meal times and daily schedules while allowing the lodge team to focus entirely on your party.

Which African countries are best for private group safaris?
The best destination depends on your group—not on a universal country ranking.
Tanzania is excellent for first-time visitors, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and groups wanting the scale of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Private vehicles are especially valuable when the group wants flexibility around photographic light, sightings and the pace of each day.
Botswana
Botswana suits groups seeking remote wilderness, small camps and a high level of exclusivity. The Okavango Delta combines game drives with water-based activities, although aircraft, vehicle and camp capacities require careful planning.
South Africa
South Africa works particularly well for multigenerational families and groups combining safari with Cape Town, the Winelands or other private experiences. Its range of accommodation and strong infrastructure can accommodate different ages and interests.
Zimbabwe and Zambia
Kenya
Kenya offers iconic wildlife, varied landscapes and private conservancies where groups can enjoy more flexible activities. It can be combined with Tanzania when sufficient time and budget are available.
We also plan private journeys through Namibia, Madagascar, the Republic of Congo and selected Indian Ocean destinations. Sometimes the best safari uses one country exceptionally well; sometimes two complementary regions create the right contrast.
Are private group safaris suitable for families with children?
Yes - provided the safari is designed around the children, rather than expecting them to fit an adult itinerary.
We consider ages, drive lengths, malaria areas, property restrictions, inter-camp travel and how much downtime the family needs. Private vehicles make it easier to shorten an activity when a young traveller has had enough, while villas and family units give everyone space to settle between adventures.
For multigenerational families, we can balance different energy levels and interests. Grandparents do not have to take every long drive, children do not need to sit quietly through an adult schedule, and the entire family can still share the moments that matter.

How far ahead should we book a private group safari?
For a group of six or more travelling during a popular wildlife season, beginning 12 to 18 months ahead is sensible. Groups need several rooms at the same properties, and private villas, small camps and family units are limited.
Travel outside the busiest periods may offer more choice and better value, but last-minute availability becomes harder as the number of travellers increases. Gorilla permits, exclusive-use properties and peak migration dates require especially early planning.
If your dates are closer, ask us anyway. Our destination knowledge and industry relationships may uncover options that are not obvious from an online search.

Will anybody outside our group join the safari?
Not when the journey is booked as fully private. Your vehicle and privately arranged activities are reserved for your invited group. At some lodges, shared activities may form part of the standard rate; we will identify these clearly and price private alternatives where available.
Can members of our group travel from different countries?
Yes. We can coordinate arrival times and recommend sensible meeting points. Depending on flight schedules, some guests may need an additional night before the safari begins.
Can different members of the group have different budgets?
They can, although agreeing on a comfortable per-person range early makes planning much easier. Room categories and optional extensions can sometimes provide flexibility without fragmenting the main journey.
Do we need to know which country we want to visit?
No. Tell us what you want to experience, when you can travel, how many people are coming and what you hope to spend. We will recommend the destinations that make sense.
Can we celebrate a birthday or anniversary on safari?
Absolutely. We can incorporate private dinners, meaningful surprises or special experiences without turning the safari into a staged production. Tell us what the person would genuinely enjoy.
Can our group combine a safari with Cape Town or the beach?
Yes. Cape Town, the Winelands and Indian Ocean islands can add an excellent contrast to a wildlife journey. We will account for travel time so the combination feels seamless rather than rushed.
